ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Numida is a fast-growing Ugandan fintech company that is building the digital products and services that African small businesses need to thrive. Our first product is a financial management app that enables Ugandan entrepreneurs to keep good records, make better decisions and access convenient and unsecured credit. Entrepreneurs use the app to keep track of their cash flows and we use the cash flow and financial management behavioral data to determine their creditworthiness and issue loans via mobile money.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a data scientist who will build new data models that will reduce the lending risk borne by Numida while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of the cost and accessibility of credit for small businesses in Uganda. Your primary datasets will include a small business owner’s financial management behavior, the cash flows of the business, the inventory records of the business, and repayment performance of existing clients.

Specific Responsibilities

- Discovering the connections between different pieces of data and credit worthiness specific to financially excluded small businesses in Uganda
- Owning one or multiple data models, building, and maintaining all data analytics infrastructure for these models
- Advising both the product and credit teams based on your findings in order to lead new ways of underwriting our clients, and improving our data capture and quality of data
- Driving strategic initiatives and experiments to improve portfolio performance and the overall customer experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

First and foremost you must believe in the power of developing world small businesses to create jobs and drive development and poverty reduction in their communities.

The ideal candidate will:

- Have a command of statistical analysis and machine learning concepts
- Be proficient in SQL and/or Python
- Be curious. You ask great questions, and you are a natural problem-solver
- Not be afraid or debilitated by ambiguity, but thrive in it. You love new challenges and you are obsessed with overcoming them
- Be independent. You can think for yourself. You don’t need someone to tell you what to do. You take initiative, and you don’t ask for permission.
- Be a strong communicator. You are thorough in documenting your learning
- Be a very hard-worker and a team player. You are not afraid to ask for help.
- (Preferably) have experience in either finance/credit or enterprise services

EWB is committed to diversity, and encourages applications from diverse candidates.

Please note: Applicants must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents, and hold an undergraduate degree or diploma.
