Come join us for this two-evening workshop facilitated by Mixed Company Associate Artist and renowned Forum Theatre practitioner Luciano Iogna. Playwriting for Forum Theatre will take participants through the particular process of creating and developing an interactive performance script for Forum Theatre.
Participants will learn:
- different approaches to writing a Forum Theatre (FT) play and the essential structure of FT plays; how to work with a community in gathering material for the play and to structure and create the play as collaboratively as possible;
- how common games and theatre techniques can be applied as research and development tools;
- when to change responsibilities from community facilitator to writer to director and back to FT facilitator and how the rehearsal process is also part of the writing process;
- how to make succinct notes during a rapidly evolving creation process;
- how to write for oppressor, oppressed, and bystander characters;
- how to decide what stays in the play and what needs to be discarded and how to utilize all that extra material gathered in the creation process that didn’t make it into the play.
In addition to the June 21st and 23rd dates listed Luciano will also offer a free one-hour session for any extra questions participants might have. This will take place on a date that will be decided by participants in order to accommodate everyone’s schedules.
This workshop is an opportunity for artists to build their skills in writing for Forum Theatre, and in getting involved with the Forum Theatre community both in Toronto and abroad. Forum Theatre is a practice that exists at the intersection of artistic creation and social change. As a company, we seek to Educate, Engage, and Empower our audiences, our participants, and our artists, and equip them with the tools they need to create meaningful change in their communities and in the world. To these ends, we encourage individuals from all walks of life to sign up for our workshops, or get in touch with us to find out how else you can be involved!
