OCIC AGM & Symposium 2016: Ontarian & The World: Universality Matters

OCIC welcomed members, friends, partners and allies from civil society organizations, government, academia, diaspora groups, and other interested communities to AGM & Symposium 2016. The event hosted special guests to share their ideas and opportunities for collective action by Ontario and Ontarians, within the broader national context, and all participants were then invited to contribute to Roundtable discussions addressing federal government and Council consultation priorities. OCIC drew on participant input to prepare a formal submission to a national policy and funding review and informed our own provincial research and mobilization efforts. This national review presented a significant opportunity to provide input and direction towards Canada’s role in the world, and prospects for global leadership in our own province.

Global Affairs Canada consultation topics included: the health and rights of women and children; clean economic growth and climate change; governance, pluralism, diversity and human rights; peace and security; responding to humanitarian crises and the needs of displaced populations, and delivering results by improving effectiveness and transparency, innovation and partnerships. OCIC Consultation topics included: collaborating with cultural communities (diaspora) in Ontario, and engaging Ontario municipalities, colleges and universities.

Key objectives of the consultation were to solicit inputs from participants to inform OCIC’s submission to the Global Affairs Canada International Assistance Review, and to inform OCIC’s research and potential for deepened engagement with diaspora communities, municipalities, colleges and universities in Ontario
