The Canadian boreal forest, one of the world’s largest intact forests, is indispensable to keeping climate change within global targets. Storing twice as much carbon as the world’s oil reserves, the Canadian boreal forest plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle. The Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defence and Nature Canada are publishing a report on the challenges industrial logging in the boreal forest poses for Canada’s climate change commitments. This webinar will provide an overview of the key findings of this report, explain proposed recommendations for better managing our boreal forests and give opportunity for the audience to ask questions of these experts.

Industrial logging is having a significant impact on the boreal forest’s ability to store and absorb carbon, undermining this critical climate ally. Current carbon accounting mechanisms downplay industrial logging’s climate impact by: omitting monitoring data which shows logging scars and other deficiencies in the forest’s regrowth; ignoring soil carbon dynamics that may play a significant role in carbon emissions, and feeding a narrative of logging as a climate solution. Failure to regulate industrial logging’s emissions is leaving a significant gap in Canada’s efforts to meet its international commitments. The Canadian boreal forest is one of the world’s best natural climate defences. It is essential that the Canadian government do everything in its power to conserve and enhance this global climate linchpin in the face of unsustainable industrial logging and safeguard our forest and climate for future generations.
