About
As part of the YMCA charitable mission, our work also extends beyond the borders of our city. Through our Global Programs, we are part of an international community of YMCAs in over 115 countries dedicated to support youth empowerment in communities around the world. The YMCA of Greater Toronto works with partners YMCAs in the global South with the purpose of learning from each other, sharing expertise, and supporting community development that promotes change towards a more just and sustainable world.
International Youth Internship Program IYIP: with the support of Global Affairs Canada, IYIP is designed for youth ages 18 to 30 who are Indigenous, racialized, living with disabilities, or 2SLGBTQIA+ — especially those facing barriers to employment. Through a three- to six-month internship, participants gain practical skills, global connections, and leadership experience with partner organizations in Africa and South America. This program is a collaboration between the YMCA of Greater Toronto, YMCA Cali, YMCA Bogota, YMCA Colombia (located in Bogota),YMCA Peru, YMCA Togo, YMCA Risaralda, and YMCA Sierra Leone.
Global Education: global awareness is integrated into programs for children, youth and adults at YMCA centres throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Each year, over 8,000 people participate in global awareness events and activities. The objectives of our global awareness activities are to: educate and inform about current global issues and trends, encourage global responsibility and action towards positive change, develop a sense of belonging to the YMCA global family, support leadership in global awareness among staff, volunteers, youth and members. Global awareness activities include:
•Peace Week activities, allowing children, youth and adults to explore peace-building from personal, community and international perspectives
•“Lunch and learns” which explore global themes from a local and global perspective
•Sharing and exchanging stories, blogs, videos, and pictures from YMCAs in communities around the world
