Life and Death in the Gaza Strip: Reports from the Frontlines

Event Details

Join us as Dr. Tarek Loubani shares his experiences delivering healthcare in Al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital, on the frontlines of the March of Return.

Doors Open at 6:30pm
Event Starts at 7:00pm

Dr. Tarek Loubani is an emergency physician who regularly volunteers in the Gaza Strip and other conflict zones. He is a physician at the London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario and Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. Tarek is an Associate Professor at Western University and founder of the Glia Project, which designs and manufactures high quality, low cost medical devices to reduce the disparity of care in poor locations.

Alex Neve is the Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada. Alex will discuss Amnesty’s campaigns on Gaza’s Great March of Return, clarifying the who, what and why behind it. He will explain the dire need for an arms embargo against Israel, how important it is for the UN to gather information on alleged perpetrators of crimes for the International Criminal Court, and why the world must call for an end to the Gaza blockade.

In 2013, along with filmmaker John Greyson, Dr. Tarek Loubani was arbitrarily arrested and spent seven weeks in Egypt’s Tora Prison without charges, subjected to physical violence and harsh conditions. While he was imprisoned and on hunger strike, Amnesty issued an urgent action for his release.

In 2018, Dr. Loubani was shot in both legs while providing emergency medical care to protesters during the Gaza border protests. He believes he was targeted by an Israeli sniper. The paramedics wore high visibility vests to identify themselves as medical personnel, but in spite of that, a total of 19 medical professionals were shot that Monday. A number were killed, including Musa Abuhassanin, the first paramedic to assist Dr. Loubani in the field, just moments after Tarek was shot.
