Event Details
How can we understand and challenge the power of AI, big tech, and misinformation to build more just and community-driven technologies? Join the Knowledge for Change Tkaronto Hub (OCIC, The University of Toronto Scarborough Knowledge Equity Lab and the Toronto Centre of Learning and Development) for a webinar and participatory discussion with Denisse Albornoz, Deputy Director of The Engine Room, and Angela Chukunzira, Mozilla Foundation Tech and Society Fellow, as we explore the social impacts of technology on marginalized communities.
✦Denisse Albornoz, Deputy Director at The Engine Room
Denisse is a researcher interested in the societal impact of technology, particularly on marginalised communities. Using justice and community-centred methodologies, she has co-designed programs with diverse groups, including scientists, artists, and activists, to mitigate online harms and advance the safe and equitable use of technology.
Before joining The Engine Room, she led and supported research at the Royal Society, Tactical Tech, Hiperderecho and the Centre for Internet and Society. Denisse is also a fellow at the Knowledge Equity Lab at the University of Toronto and serves on the Advisory Board of the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA). In her spare time, she enjoys planning trips to try new food or to explore the nearest mountain or beach.
✦Angela Chukunzira, Mozilla Foundation Tech and Society Fellow
Angela has been involved with social movements and their communicative practices in Nairobi. She has also examined the intersection of labour within the digital economy specifically with location-based platform workers and the ‘invisible’ tech workers. She has previously researched on youth perceptions of digitisation, unemployment and what the future of work(ers) looks like.
