LOCATION: MONGOLIA , Ulaanbaatar, MONGOLIA

DURATION: 6 months

EXPECTED DEPARTURE DATE:
Departure date is contingent upon completion of administrative file and approval of visa. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and position will remain open until filled.

OVERVIEW:
World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and Canadian Executive Services Organization (CESO) are working in partnership to implement the Mongolia: Enhancing Resource management through Institutional Transformation (MERIT) initiative. MERIT is a multi-year initiative that will enhance the public sector management of the Mongolian extractive sector to maximize its contribution to sustainable economic and social development. With the technical support of qualified Canadian volunteers, MERIT is working closely with several partners to build capacity in a number of areas, including gender equality, monitoring and evaluation, environmental management, delivery of quality training, public consultation and inter-agency collaboration, with the overall objective of responsible resource management in Mongolia.

PARTNER DESCRIPTION:
The Mongolia University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a leading state university with its main campus situated in Ulaanbaatar. In 2014, the School of Geology and Mining (SGM) was established and currently consists of four departments: Geology & Hydrogeology, Geodesy, Petroleum and Drilling, and Mining. SGM includes 13 research centres with a total of 70 researchers, enrolment of 2700 students at the Bachelor’s level and 1000 students at the Master’s and Ph.D. levels.

SGM is working towards achieving international accreditation for its programs and courses. MERIT is supporting SGM in this process and will provide technical support to develop leadership and management capacity including gender mainstreaming for its faculty and staff. As part of this process, a draft Gender Analysis report has been produced.

The partnership between MERIT and SGM also aims to to improve the delivery of quality skills programming among training institutions supporting the extractive sector.

The Government of Mongolia has made important international and national commitments to achieve gender equality to advance economic growth and prosperity for all Mongolian citizens. Mongolia is a signatory to all conventions and agreements pertaining to human rights, gender equality and the empowerment of women.

SGM and MERIT are recruiting a Gender Advisor to provide support and capacity development to the Gender committee of SGM (and other MERIT partners as needed) to increase its capacity for gender awareness, inclusion in SGM’s policies and procedures, and promote gender mainstreaming to faculty and students via training and knowledge sharing events (workshops and information sessions).

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Gender Advisor will provide support and capacity building to the SGM Gender committee in the following areas:
- Design and deliver training sessions on gender awareness, inclusion and mainstreaming for SGM faculty and students;
- Provide support to the Gender committee on gender mainstreaming to make policy and procedures gender equitable;
- Provide support on gender research and analysis at research and development centres of SGM;
- Provide support on gender awareness course development to the Training and Administration department;
- Encourage the participation and inclusion of women and youth in all activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- University degree in education, sociology, gender studies or a related field;
- Past experience in gender mainstreaming, preferably in an educational context;
- Strong analytical skills;
- Excellent communication and reporting skills;
- Knowledge and experience in monitoring and evaluation activities will be an asset.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.
- Departure date is contingent upon the timely completion of all administrative requirements (e.g. visa processes, medical clearance, police checks, travel documentation).
- With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
