OVERVIEW:
The West Africa Governance & Economic Sustainability in Extractive Areas (WAGES) is jointly implemented by World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and the Centre d’étude et de coopération internationale (CECI) in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Guinea. Working in partnership with communities, local government, mining companies, and other stakeholders, the project will enable communities, particularly women and youth, to maximize the socio-economic benefits from extractive resource investment in West Africa. The project’s principal areas of focus include local governance, sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and regional knowledge-sharing on development best practices in mining areas. The expected results of the project include: increasing employment opportunities for community members, especially youth and women; ii) strengthening capacity of sub-national governments and local institutions to leverage opportunities arising from natural resource development, especially the extractives sector; and iii) increasing informed dialogue on local economic growth and governance strategies in regions with natural resource development activities, within the three target countries and across West Africa.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the WAGES Project Coordinator, and in close collaboration with the Economic Development Specialist, the Entrepreneurship Training Advisor will undertake a review of the existing Business Advisory Centres entrepreneurship training modules and make recommendations for improvement with specific attention to aspects related to gender, youth and the green economy.
Entrepreneurship training modules development:
- Develop new and improved entrepreneurship training guide as appropriate to enable the BACs to expand their entrepreneurship training program
- Work with service providers to review their curriculum and make appropriate recommendations for improving the curriculum to meet international standards
- Support the development of innovative, cost-effective and appropriate promotional campaigns for the value of entrepreneurship, employability and enrichment to youth and women
Business Development:
- Support businesses, cooperatives and individuals to conceptualise, develop, implement and evaluate long-term strategic growth plans and business initiatives to improve growth of the businesses.
- Provide technical advice on identification and formulation of business opportunities, initiatives, and partnerships for the development of viable services or products
- Provide technical expertise in the development and implementation of strategy/business plans for partners
Capacity Building:
- Train WAGES team and BACs to review, analyse and evaluate business strategies and plans for new business initiatives and provide detailed financial models to examine value of income generating business ideas
- Provide strategic direction in the management of marketing and sales functions of businesses and cooperatives
- Provide leadership in the development of policies, standards, operating procedures and work plan for businesses and cooperatives
Knowledge Development and Sharing:
- Document and share tools and good practices
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A university degree in Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, Project Management, Economics or related field
- Proven and demonstrable ability to develop fresh approaches and innovations
- Strong entrepreneurial drive, passion and ability to help shape the marketing strategies of small businesses and start-ups
- Thorough understanding of business strategic development
- Excellent knowledge of strategic business planning methodologies, tools and techniques
- Demonstrated ability to articulate, package and sell business
- Excellent leadership, managerial, coaching, mentoring and interpersonal skills in team setting
- Excellent presentation, communication and report writing skills

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.
- Departure date is contingent upon the timely completion of all administrative requirements (e.g. visa processes, medical clearance, police checks, travel documentation).
- With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
