OVERVIEW:
Uniterra is a leading Canadian international volunteer cooperation and development program, jointly implemented by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

Uniterra contributes to improving the socio-economic conditions of poor and marginalized communities in 14 countries and with over 200 partners in Africa, Asia and the Americas through the exchange of expertise and knowledge of Canadian and international volunteers. Uniterra believes that economic growth, when inclusive, is the most powerful driver of poverty reduction. The purpose of the Uniterra program is to improve the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable populations by stimulating growth and facilitating access to the benefits of growing and diversified markets. To make this happen, we are working with our local partners to enhance the income of poor and marginalized women and youth through better access to employment and income generation opportunities. Uniterra country program staff work with our local partners to design Uniterra assignments in the context of the country strategy, supporting the inclusion of women and youth in key economic sub-sectors.

PARTNER DESCRIPTION:
The College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka (CAWM) has trained over 5,000 wildlife managers from 52 countries in the past 50 years. The college provides professional and technical training to address wildlife sustainability challenges in Africa, maintaining the high standard of training by engaging the global community and undertaking relevant research. Mweka's achievements have lead the East African Community to identify it as the only training institution Center of Excellence in this sector. It is also the only recipient in Tanzania of the UN Environmental Program Prize for achievement in environment and the potential to make outstanding contributions. The Advocacy Research Advisor volunteer will contribute to Uniterra program and CAWM objectives by working closely with the tourism department and the Uniterra Tanzania Gender Advisor volunteer toward the following:

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support research to analyze the existing tour guiding governance framework (legislation, policies and institutions), and its strengths and weaknesses;
- Support partner in making informed recommendations based on the research conducted to the government on tour guiding governance in the country;
- Build partner staff capacity in mainstreaming gender in research and advocacy, with guidance from the Uniterra Tanzania Gender Advisor volunteer;
- Work to ensure youth and gender inclusion considerations are within all aspects of the assignment;
- Produce reports required by the partner organization and the Uniterra program.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree and/or formal training in tourism, governance, international development, or a related field
- 2-5 years experience in research, policy analysis, or a related field
- Experience in the international tourism industry is a strong asset
- Commitment to and understanding of gender equality, youth inclusion and volunteering
- Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills
- Intercultural communications skills and diplomacy
- Experience with training and mentorship
- Ability to work well in a team, as well as independently taking initiative
- Experience as an international volunteer is an asset

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada between the age of 18-70.
- Departure date is contingent upon the timely completion of all administrative requirements (e.g. visa processes, medical clearance, police checks, travel documentation).
- With the support of the program, all volunteers shall undertake to make a minimum financial contribution of $1,500 for participating in the program.
