About
KWIC connects people to global issues and local initiatives through opportunities that can change how we understand the world and to create equitable and sustainable communities.
Over 3000 youth and community members participate in KWIC events annually, led by a small staff team, amazing volunteers and creative community collaborations. KWIC’s Global Education and Resource Centre provides welcoming and inclusive learning and working spaces that includes a free lending library.
As a grassroots, charitable organization since 1989, we make change happen through 3 key program areas:
• Community Education: KWIC connects our community to global issues through education events, workshops, film, panel and artist presentations. Inspiring local and international guests share from diverse perspectives and knowledge systems, on important issues such as climate change, Indigenous Rights, food sovereignty, water, resource extraction, democracy and human rights. People come away from KWIC events with new perspectives, a deeper understanding of important global issues and their local connections – and we hope, aspiring to take action!
• Youth & In School Programs: We recognize and value the importance of youth participation and leadership in all aspects of our organization. KWIC supports youth through education, leadership training, employment/mentorship, internships and with valuable volunteer opportunities. The Seeds for Justice Facilitators Collective uses a peer-mentorship model to develop and facilitate participatory workshops for schools and groups on a variety of issues ranging from Youth & Democracy to Food Waste – and with a focus on building inclusive, welcoming youth spaces. Global Youth Day is a youth-organized one day conference that gathers over 100 local youth together for a day of networking, workshops, speakers and inspiration.
• KWIC Umbrella: KWIC’s responds, nurtures and grows innovative community ideas under our charitable umbrella until they are self-sufficient. Some of the best known examples that make an important impact in our community today are GreenUP, Kawartha Food Share and ReFrame International Film Festival. We currently support TRACKS Youth Program, Youth Leadership in Sustainability (YLS), Trent Oxfam and Sustainable Trent. There is someone out there with the next innovative idea and KWIC wants to be there for them!
