Beyond the headlines: Livelihoods and tea garden workers in Darjeeling

Event Details

Fr. Lalit Tirkey SJ is the Director of the Human Life Development and Research Centre (HLDRC).

The Human Life Development and Research Centre (HLDRC) is an initiative of the Jesuits in Darjeeling. The centre works with tea garden workers, who are often denied a just wage, access to legal benefits, and sometimes forced to become indentured labourers. The work of HLDRC includes training in human rights, implementing alternative livelihood opportunities and conducting seminars on socio-economic issues as well as legal and women’s rights.

He will present the work of HLDRC with tea estate workers in the region of Darjeeling. This event is part of Canadian Jesuits International’s (CJI’s) Tell Ten campaign which aims to raise awareness about projects that offer economic alternatives for small-scale farmers, tea estate workers and people who are marginalized.
