Event Details
Background:
The 2017 United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held from 10-19 July 2017 in New York, marked another critical opportunity for the international community to come together to collectively discuss implementation and progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda, convened under the theme of “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world.”
The 2017 HLPF was highly significant, with 43 countries presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNR), nearly double the amount from 2016. It also marked the first time that thematic reviews were undertaken around specific SDGs, which included an in-depth examination of the following goals:
Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Goal 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development (to be considered each year).
In the 2030 Agenda, Member States have also emphasized that the HLPF should draw high-level political attention to gaps or areas where commitments are lagging behind and provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations for follow up to accelerate progress. While the 2017 HLPF made it clear that momentum is building towards implementation of the 2030 Agenda in many contexts, significant challenges still remain.
This webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to take stock of the outcomes and key takeaways from the 2017 HLPF, and will discuss key questions regarding the future of the HLPF and reviews of the 2030 Agenda.
