The 2018 reports that will be discussed include:
• Toxic Substances – “The government does not know how well it is meeting its goal of protecting Canadians from the risk of toxic substances”
• Protecting Marine Mammals – “The government did little to protect marine mammals from the risk of commercial fishing and navigation until recently.”
• Sustainable Development Strategies (specifically on strategic environmental assessment) – “The government does not know how well it is meeting its goal of protecting Canadians from the risk of toxic substances”
• Environmental Petitions (with a number of interesting case studies, e.g., Agenda 2030 and nuclear liability insurance) – “Petitioners not satisfied by ministers’ answers to questions about the environment and sustainable development.”
About Julie Gelfand
Julie was appointed as Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development in March 2014. Before joining the Office of the Auditor General, Ms. Gelfand held the positions of Chief Advisor at Rio Tinto Canada and of Vice-President of Environment and Social Responsibility at the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC).
