Founded by physicians in 1984 in response to famine in Ethiopia, CPAR (Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief) is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization headquartered in Canada with offices and programs in Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania.
CPAR’s mission is to work in partnership with vulnerable communities and diverse organizations to overcome poverty and build healthy communities in Africa. CPAR collaborates with communities to address the key determinants of health based on the belief that everything is connected and health includes human well-being, environmental integrity and social justice.
CPAR’s program portfolio emphasizes four streams of action: Clean Water and Sanitation; Food Security and Nutrition; Essential Health Services; and Building Secure Livelihoods. CPAR’s approach is centred on gender equality and community empowerment; helping to facilitate the process by which communities fully realize their knowledge and capacities to contribute towards positive, sustainable change.
