Development Drinks is a monthly networking event for development professionals run by OCIC volunteers in Ottawa and Toronto. Held the second week of each month – on Wednesday in Ottawa, and Thursday in Toronto – it provides a space to connect with others who are passionate about working, volunteering and learning about the sector.  Development Drinks events are free, and registration is required.

OCIC Ottawa Development Drinks Event: Challenges and Opportunities for Women’s Participation in Politics, with guest speaker Neesa Medina, Security and Gender Analyst, Centro de Derechos de Mujeres, Honduras
Women have the right to participate in political processes that affect them and their society. Studies have shown that countries with increased women’s political participation tend to be more inclusive, responsive, egalitarian, and democratic. Yet, women around the world are still largely absent from national and local decision-making bodies and are often excluded from political processes. Despite representing half the global population, women comprise less than 20 percent of the world’s legislators. From discrimination and violence to a lack of support and resources, women face countless challenges to participation in the civic and political life of their countries.

Strengthening women’s rights and addressing barriers to political participation are critical to achieving gender equality and female empowerment. Please join OCIC and Cuso International for an International Development Week (IDW) event! IDW aims to highlight what Canada and Canadians are doing to make a better world as well as to encourage people to contribute actively to international development.
